Complexity in sketchbooks

When I reflect on the process of creating this sketchbook, I realize how many elements must come together to achieve a satisfying result in creative work.

What it means to work with the format of a concertina sketchbook like this one, I had already described in a previous blog post.

I made this particular sketchbook myself. The front and back covers feature prints with botanical motifs that I created by using a gelli plate. They seemed fitting for exploring a landscape theme inside the sketchbook.

In addition, of course, the choice of painting materials also plays a major role. In this case, the use of liquid paint served as the starting point for the atmospheric effect. The liquid paint actually evolved into a picture in its own right, and the way all other elements were subordinated to this impression shaped the entire composition and resulted in a harmonious work of art.

In summary, intention, material, experimentation, and focus came together to form a harmonious whole. This illustrates just how multifaceted and complex working in sketchbooks can be and how important they are for strengthening one’s own artistic voice.
