Let the paint do it

Mark-making can be particularly challenging. It’s about learning to make marks and simply letting them do their thing. This is especially important when working with fluid media like watercolor and ink.

I really had to practice letting the paint flow without interfering. In this sketchbook project, I focused on exactly that: simply letting the paint do its thing.

After working with black ink in the first step, I used blue acrylic paint in the next step, making sure to use different tools each time. This motivated me to use additional colors, including by incorporating new collage papers.

The key is to fully engage with paint as a material and observe what it can contribute to the image without any intervention on my part.
